OBJECTIVE: To build an online game in a rapid timeframe during a game jam session

CONCEPT: A browser-based 3D experience that brings you face-to-face with your fears

Synopsis

Born from what is commonly known as a “game jam” aka a very stressful sprint where a development team goes from 0 to 1 in a very rapid window of time or a hackathon, Bad Dream VR is an online, 3D, first-person game developed by a multi-disciplinary team from Arcvale. Our team was made up of several artists, developers, a product manager, and a game designer. This team faced several constraints, all stemming from the extremely compressed timeline of the game jam situation.

While compressed timelines are definitely not something to do often, this experience allowed our team to come together as a unit while bringing in their own unique perspectives and skillsets. Built to take you face to face with your fears, Bad Dream is a virtual reality experience that combines the exhilaration of looking your fear in the eye with the novelty of stepping into a techno colored dreamscape.

Our Process

The process behind this game revolved around combining existing concepts adapted around the constraints of time and design. The team encountered several challenges through the course of this game jam, including having to fight with GitHub’s large file system (LFS). Starting with a rough, initial concept of “the floor is lava”, the game pivoted to its final fear-based concept while bringing in assets and scenes inspired by previous studio projects. This integration of a variety of scenes and concepts allowed our team to flex their creative muscles and made it an extremely iterative process.
